Students, please watch the first video, below. You might want to watch it more than once. We watched this one in class together. You are welcome to watch the other one as well, but we'll be getting to it together, and this lesson does not use it.
These videos contain a lot of good information that you will use throughout this course.
After you have viewed the video, respond to the following in a five-paragraph essay. Keep in mind all that you learn in the video as you write. Remember, do not immediately jump into your essay. "Think on paper" by creating an informal outline or doing some free writing. Write a draft, then revise it. Hand in a copy in class on Friday that represents at least two drafts.
Here's your question: after reading your assignment #4, on violence in football, the class discussed some of the issues raised. We discussed that in some ways, the questions around violence and safety in football come down to good decision-making. A prospective football player must make a careful decision about whether to play, and must understand the risks involved.
But is all the burden on the player to decide what those risks are? Do the team, the coach, the managers, the owners, etc. have any responsibility to education potential players?
So the assignment boils down to this: write a five-paragraph essay in which you analyze, describe and discuss a high-stakes decision that you have made, or that you have observed in someone else. You might use this as a way of focusing: what three characteristics are most important in making important or high-stakes decisions? ...Or you can get other ideas by watching the video, below. Due Friday, typed, about 500 words (1.5 pages, double-spaced.)
